Suspect fatally shot after California carjackings

(CNN) — The intense search for an armed carjacking suspect, which involved the closure of a busy California interstate, ended Friday night with authorities shooting and killing the suspect.

Authorities chased the man, who has not yet been identified, to an apartment building in north Sacramento, said Jason Ramos of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department.

The man barricaded himself and set fire to the building as officers were trying to get him to surrender, Ramos said.

“That is when the decision was made to neutralize him,” Ramos said.

The shooting ended a chase that started about 6 a.m. Friday when the suspect was discovered in a building by three employees of a trucking company. The man allegedly fired on the employees and later ran away. None of the employees sustained gunshot wounds.

Police then received a carjacking call involving a white pickup truck; the driver was not injured, authorities said.

Later, the suspect allegedly crashed the truck on Interstate 80. He fired upon — but did not strike — police officers during the chase.

The incident caused the closure of about 10 miles of the interstate between Davis and Sacramento until 12:30 p.m. The suspect carjacked another pickup truck and put that driver in the hospital with head injuries, authorities said.

While the interstate was closed, the suspect escaped to the apartment building.

The highway closure caused a major problem for many.

“It’s a major inconvenience to a lot of folks,” said Dennis Keaton, a spokesman for the California Department of Transportation. “You have a lot of traveling commerce and commuters.”
